HOW AMAZING THEY ARE!

HOW AMAZING THEY ARE!

(Written by Kristoforus Ningka,S.Pd)

Being an English teacher at SMAN 6 Kota Komba seems to be an unforgettable memory I have ever had. The story started when Rm. Eduardus (The headmaster of SMAS Seminari Pius XII Kisol) informed and delegated me to have English class at SMAN 6 Kota Komba for a week. “This is the teacher and student exchange program between SMAN 6 Kota Komba and SMAS Seminari Pius XII Kisol”, he told me at that sunny morning. “Yes”, I spontaneously responded him to show my readiness. Time flew like an arrow. It was the 20th of February 2023, the time when we came to that school for the first time. To start that new lovely day, the teachers and students gathered and attended the flag ceremony in the school yard. Honestly, we felt so honoured when we were asked to introduce ourselves in front of many students and teachers before the ceremony ended.

At the teacher’s room:

I really admired the teachers’ hospitality in welcoming us. Yes, they are very friendly. When I and the other teachers were enjoying a cup of coffee in the first break time, Mr. Frumen (The headmaster of SMAN 6 Kota Komba) came closer and then told his amazing past experiences when he was a history teacher at one of school in Manggarai. To be honest, he is very friendly and communicative. He made us felt at home. The other teachers also did the the same thing. They shared their experiences in teaching. Mr. Adi (one of English teacher) told his experiences in teaching his students English Grammar. Additionally, he also told his past experiences when he was a student at Sanpio. Besides, we also seriously discussed many things about some learning strategies and methods that can be applied in teaching and learning process. It was really impressive and amazed.

In the classroom:

Well, here we come to a very important topic, but before going further, let me get back to the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), the time when I met Mr. Max (one of handsome English teacher at SMAN 6 Kota Komba). We talked many things about time schedule and English teaching materials. He asked me to teach the students about narrative text for the X grade and descriptive text for the XI grade. At the same time, I asked him to teach the X grade students about hortatory exposition text. We agreed each other and started to change our lesson plans or module.

“Good morning, Sir”, they greeted me cheerfully when I came to that class for the first time. ”Good morning, too. It is my pleasure to meet you here in this class. Are you all ready to learn English today?”, I asked them to know their readiness. “Yes, Sir”, they responded me enthusiastically. Then we started the class in that very sunny morning. We learnt about descriptive text at that time. As usual, I used to ask some questions to activate their prior knowledge on what they have already learnt. This is also the way I diagnosed their understanding on the learning material. I was really amazed the way they responded my questions. To be honest, most of the students actively answered all my questions correctly. To that learning material, I applied Project Based Learning (PJBL) model and the learning objective that had to be achieved was students would be able to write descriptive text correctly. Considering to the learning model I applied (PJBL), then I designed learning activities based on the sintak of PJBL. To be clear, we agreed to make product in the form of English wall magazine which contained the students’ descriptive text. The product means what the students create at the end of the lesson to demonstrate the mastery of the content. This can be in the form of tests, projects, reports, or other activities. To be more attractive, I asked them to type and design their description in Canva Apps with various topics. I totally believe that to allow the students choosing the topic of their writing would stimulate them to put more efforts on it. That was also one way I did to differentiate instruction in teaching and learning process. As for me, learning process need to be integrated with technology. It also aimed at making the students more creative and familiar with interactive learning media. As the result, they did it very well and finally English wall magazine was published on 24th of February 2023. It was really incredible. Thank you so much and very high appreciation I address to Mr. Frumen (The headmaster of SMA 6 Kota Komba) for the supports. As one of the sintak of PJBL, it is obvious that there would be assessment and evaluation on the products. Besides, the teacher and students would make a reflection for all the learning activities.

A brief reflection:

Mother Theresa from Calcuta had ever said,”Do small things with great love”. Honestly, I do appreciate of what the XI grade students of SMAN 6 did. They put more possitive efforts on it.This seems too small and simple but when the students did it continuously with great love and strong desire, I highly believe that they will grow up with a good process and that very simple process will enable them to do and handle greater jobs and responsibilities. I realize that the product is still far from perfection, but their efforts to achieve learning goal must be appreciated. So, to them the title of this very brief writing is addressed. Yes, to the XI grade students of SMAN 6 Kota Komba because they are amazing. Thank you so much and high appreciation I address to Mr. Frumen (The headmaster of SMAN 6), all the teachers of SMAN 6 Kota Komba, and students for these six days. We will keep waiting for the next program.
